“X-Men: Apocalypse” won’t hit theaters for another two years, but Bryan Singer is already spilling details.
The director-writer-producer told Total Film magazine that “Apocalypse,” which will deal with the notion of ancient mutants, but be set in the 1980s, will be the most destructive movie in the franchise.
“‘Apocalypse’ will have more of the mass destruction that ‘X-Men’ films, to date, have not relied upon,” Singer said. “There’s definitely now a character and a story that allow room for that kind of spectacle.”
Singer, Dan Harris, Michael Dougherty and Simon Kinberg are currently working on the prequel’s script, which is “almost ready to go.”
The helmer also hinted that the pic could feature familiar characters in unfamiliar states.
“We’ll introduce familiar characters in a younger time,” he told the mag. “That’ll be fun to show the audience. I call these movies in-between-quels. It’s a mind-f**k sometimes in terms of where things fall in the timeline!”
Singer, who’s working on his fourth “X-Men” pic, said he’s like to tell more stories beyond “Apocalypse.”
“It all stems back to when I did [the first] X-Men,” he said. “You always want to know where a character’s going to go, what their future’s going be like. You can always sequelise. … As a director, you always need a backstory to give your actors. It may not be the right backstory, but it’s one you can give the actor to help them understand their character. These prequels are really exciting for me because they give me a chance to explore ideas I came up with more than a decade ago.”
“X-Men: Days of Future Past” opens on May 23, while “Apocalypse” bows on May 26, 2016.
