Principal photography began in Atlanta, Lionsgate studios announced on Tuesday. The new film will hit theaters March 20, 2015.
Octavia Spencer joins the returning cast, which includes Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q and Mekhi Phifer.
Divergent proved itself to be a hit when it opened in March, making $260 million in worldwide box office. The story is based on first-time author Veronica Roth'sDivergent trilogy, which has sold more than 22 million copies worldwide.
The plot of Insurgent features Tris and Four as fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine, the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite.
"Racing against time, they must find out what Tris's family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world," a Lionsgate release states about the plot.
The third and fourth installments of the series, Allegiant -- Parts 1 & 2, are due to be released March 18, 2016 and March 24, 2017 respectively.
