Octavia Spencer has joined the cast of “Insurgent,” the second installment in Lionsgate’s “Divergent” franchise.
Spencer will play Johanna, the leader of Amity, which is the faction in the dystopian society that is said to be dedicated to peace and trust. She will star alongside Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet. The film will be directed by Robert Schwentke from a screenplay by Brian Duffield and Akiva Goldsman.
Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher will produce the film through their Red Wagon Entertainment banner along with Pouya Shahbazian.
“Insurgent” will be released on March 20. The third book, “Allegiant,” will be split into two films that are slated for release on March 18, 2016, and March 24, 2017, respectively. “Divergent” opened this past March and has grossed $252 million worldwide.
Spencer’s credits include “The Help,” “Fruitvale Station” and the upcoming “Get On Up” and “Snowpiercer.” She also appears in the upcoming Fox TV series “Red Band Society.” She is represented by WME and Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum Morris & Klein.
