50 Shades of Grey: Marcia Gay Harden to play Christian Grey's mum

The Oscar-winning Miller's Crossing actress joins Jamie Dornan and Rita Ora on the Fifty Shades of Grey cast

The first major film industry name to join the Fifty Shades of Grey cast has been announced. Marcia Gay Harden, the Academy Award-winning star of films such as Miller's Crossing and Into the Wild, will play Dr Grace Trevelyan Grey.

According to Hollywood insider Deadline.com, Gay Harden will play the adoptive mother of dominating billionaire Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan. Gay Harden, who won an Oscar in 2001 for her supporting role in Pollock and was nominated in the same category in 2004, will be filming alongside those making their major title debuts in Fifty Shades of Grey.

On Tuesday it was announced that British-Kosovan singer Rita Ora will be appearing in the film as Dr Grey's daughter Mia. Fifty Shades of Grey will be Dakota Johnson's first major film role, as the film's heroine, Anastasia Steele.

In November, Fifty Shades of Grey's studio, Universal Pictures, announced that the film would be released on Valentine's Day 2015, rather than the original date of August 1 2014. The delay is partly due to original Christian Grey actor Charlie Hunnam abandoning the project, but producers also hope that the film will be better received by couples than women alone.
