Macklemore & Ryan Lewis knew what they were talking about when they belted out the hooky chorus “the ceiling can’t hold us.” The unstoppable duo dominated Spotify this year.
Aside from nabbing top honors as the most streamed artists in the world on the digital music service in 2013, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us” was also the most streamed song of the year, while their 2012 hit “Thrift Shop” was the most streamed song of the last five years. Both tracks were featured on their debut album, “The Heist” — the most streamed album worldwide.
If Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were Spotify kings as the most streamed male artists, then Rihanna is the reigning queen as the most streamed female for the second year in a row. Another female powerhouse, 16-year-old Lorde, was the most viral new artist (with the most shared tracks on the site weekly) and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” was the most viral track.
However, U.S. listeners’ habits differed from the worldwide population. Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” and “Night Visions” topped those song and album categories, respectively. Drake was the most streamed artist in the nation.
Spotify’s 24 million global users steamed a whopping 4.5 billion hours of music his year.
