Sacha Baron Cohen too well-known to play Freddie Mercury, says Brian May
Sacha Baron Cohen was too recognizable to play Freddie Mercury in a forthcoming biopic of the flamboyant singer, according to Queen's Brian May.
Mercury's former bandmate said the presence of the Borat star would have been distracting for audiences. He told the Daily Mirror: "It seemed like a good idea in the beginning but the truth is, he's too recognisable. He's very much a style and a character. I think that he would have been very distracting. That's the conclusion we came to."
Guitarist May, who is producing the biopic with his fellow bandmates, is the second member of Queen to question Baron Cohen's credentials. Drummer Roger Taylor said last month that the comic actor was dismissed because the band did not want the film to be "a joke".
However, both men were speaking in the wake of suggestions on Hollywood trade websites that the erstwhile Ali G star walked away because Queen wanted a sanitised take on Mercury's life. Baron Cohen, who starred in Les Miserables and Hugo and had recruited the Oscar-winning screenwriter Peter Morgan to work on the script, reportedly wanted a racy "warts-and-all" approach.
Captain America's Dominic Cooper was recently linked to the long-gestating biopic. Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe moved quickly last month to scotch a tabloid report that suggested he was considering the role.

Lizzy Caplan Lands Role in the Interview
Lizzy Caplan has joined James Franco and Seth Rogen in upcoming comedy 'The Interview'

The 'Bachelorette' actress has been cast as the female lead opposite Seth Rogen and James Franco in the upcoming spy thriller spoof.
Franco plays a handsome talk show host who mistakenly gets involved in a plot to assassinate the North Korean Prime Minister along with his producer buddy (Rogen).
Deadline reports that Caplan, 31, is on board to play intelligence operative Agent Lacey in the movie, which is being directed by long-time collaborators Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
The comedy duo - who recently teamed up for 'This Is The End' - are working from a script based on their original idea cooked up with 'Daily Show' veteran Dan Sterling. Filming begins this autumn in Vancouver, Canada.
Franco, Rogen and Goldberg previously starred together in Paul Feig and Judd Apatow's cult TV series, 'Freaks & Geeks', which aired from 1999 to 2000.
Meanwhile, Rogen and Goldberg are also working on the unlikely-sounding story of an animated sausage.
The R-rated movie, called 'Sausage Party', is about a lonely banger's journey to discover the truth about his existence after falling out of a shopping trolley.
